Feature 001   Premiere   Autistic Pride Day 2026

Autism Went Mainstream. The Systems Did Not.

Autism went mainstream. The systems meant to support autistic people did not move with it.A 22 minute conversation. Autism is more visible now. The support systems have not changed.

In this fireside conversation for Autistic Pride Day 2026, Dr Sharon Zivkovic and I ask what visibility is worth when the machinery stays the same, and what autistic people are owed now that everyone is suddenly paying attention.

The 2026 theme says it plainly: autism is trending. Now do something about it.

A fireside with Dr Sharon Zivkovic and Kyriakos Gold, presented with SydWest.

From the essay

You can't set people on fire and then call them hot.

Autism is trending. I am done waiting.

What I work on.

Most of my work starts from the same suspicion: that we keep measuring the wrong things.

We count who is in the room and never ask what happens between people once they are there. We celebrate equality on 8 March and stop checking on 9 March. We call autistic people vulnerable when it is the system that makes them so. We announce funding for social enterprises and route it to everyone except the enterprises.

I write, broadcast, convene and build from that suspicion. I rarely write about my life. I write from it. The personal matters because it is evidence, not because it is exceptional.

I look at what we measure. Often we measure the wrong things. I write essays, make videos and run events about this.
